Kilmaurs primary kids get money-wise with new school lessons
6 FebruaryPupils at Kilmaurs Primary school have been learning that, in these days of economic recession, it’s never too soon to learn about managing money – even if it is only your pocket money.
In an effort to become more ‘economically aware’, youngsters at Kilmaurs Primary recently set up their own in-school Credit Union (CU) in partnership with East Ayrshire Credit Union.
Depute Headteacher Marianne Bradley said: “Our Credit Union will allow pupils to save money in an ethical way through a financial co-operative, while developing an understanding of financial transactions”.
To launch the savings plan, the P6 class led a whole school get-together for pupils and staff. They performed a short play about the benefits of saving and then the children were challenged to create a name and logo for their Union, while younger classmates designed books containing ideas about things pupils could save for.
Winning name was Kilmaurs Cool Cash Club, chosen by Robyn Morton and Jade Gillingham.
Marianne Bradley said: “Last year, all pupils participated in a financial education week where they took part in money management activities. We wanted to build on what the children have been learning since then, to promote economic awareness”.
Collections take place in school on Friday mornings. P6 pupils, who have been trained in book keeping and record keeping, are responsible for the collection point each week, supervised by Principal Teacher Mary Cotton. There was keen competition for the jobs – youngsters completed application forms and were interviewed as part of the selection process for the important posts.
