The Maak's Well
The Maak's, Monk's or Mack's Well water runs into the Carmel beneath Kilmaurs Place. It is said that many years ago the laird tried to prevent the local people from using the well. It dried up until the lord changed his mind, but has run continuously ever since.
The well or spring's source is covered by large sandstone blocks and sits close to the burn on the sdge of the Kilmaurs bowling club ground.
Stepping stones gave access from the other bank until a footbridge was built in 1824. The correct local pronunciation is said to be close to 'Mank's well.
One summer in the 19th century the Carmel Burn almost dried up, but the Maak's well did not, and local farmers brought their carts up the riverbed to collect water in barrels, etc. straight from the well spout. At the time a local child was killed by being struck on the head when the cart went under the bridge.
